Background details
The business sector encompasses a variety of products and services: foods, import-export, car manufacturers, car spare parts and services, insurances, banks, investment companies, chemical and petrochemical, retails, construction and construction materials, cosmetics, distribution, household appliances, computers, medical and pharmaceuticals, furniture, stationary items, catering, footwear and sport items, transportation. The most representative businesses in terms of turnover are the car manufacturers in Pitesti and Campulung, and rubber manufacturer in Pitesti. A number of bank branches well-known in Romania are operating there: ABN AMRO Bank, ING Barings, Commercial bank of Romania, Commercial Bank "Ion Tiriac".
The market is well developed in terms of products and services and interesting from the touristic point of view.
History and Tourism
Pitesti is situated on the right part of Arges river, surrounded by three hills: Stefanesti and Big Valley (East), Turcesti and Papucesti (West), Golesti (South). It was historically mentioned in May 20, 1388, by Mircea the Old. Also, it was a princely residence between XV and XVI century, and involved in great historical events: 1821 and 1848 revolutions, Romania unification battle, and independence war.
Today, Pitesti, is an important economic, cultural and scientific center.
The most important tourist objectives are: Museum Complex (history, art, biology), Princely Church (XVII century), 1907 monument (1960), Independence Heroes monument (1877/1878), Arges Heroes Gate (1926), Nicolae Balcescu statue (1969), Memorial House "Liviu Rebreanu" (a famous Romanian writer), Trivale park (27 ha).
Campulung, situated in a valley, the first capital of Wallahia, the south part of Romania (1330), and moved later to Curtea de Arges. In 1521, it became famous for its printing house; in 1669, one of the first Romanian schools in Romanian language was founded there. The oldest official document written in Romanian was discovered called "The letter of Neacsu from Campulung to the judge of Brasov".
As tourist objectives there are mentioned: City Museum (history, art, Romanian ethnography and popular art), "Negru Voda" Medieval Architectonic Assembly which has the oldest preserved funeral tomb till now, Radu Negru Basarab monument (1910), the park with a natural trees reservation.
Curtea de Arges, most representative by its monastery complex "Curtea de Arges".
| Neagoe Basarab founded the monastery complex in 1517, on the old spot of Wallachia Episcopy. The initial paintings were completed in 1526, in Italian style. Now it is well preserved in The Art Museum in Bucharest. Princes, one by one, did repairs and improvements, but the most serious one started in 1875 and ended in 1885. The church architecture is in Byzantine style with Persian and Arabic influences, dedicated to Virgin Mary. |

In pronaos there are some of the famous Romanian personalities funeral tombs: Neagoe Basarab and his wife, Radu de la Afumati, Romanian kings and their wives Carol I and Elisabeth (known also as Carmen Sylva), Ferdinand and Maria (the second royal family).
Nowadays it is the residence of the Arges Episcopy.
All these cities are important gates to other wonderful touristic surroundings: Ramnicu-Valcea and Targoviste spa, another Wallachian medieval capital.
